Introduction to Pattern Cutting for Beginners
March 28th - March 29th 2026
Objective:
To learn how to take a bag from sketch to pattern, then develop that pattern into a prototype and finally a finished piece.
In this lesson, we’ll be creating a pattern for a shopper bag. Over the two sessions, you’ll learn how to draft a pattern with a gusset, simple handles, and an inside pocket. Once the pattern is complete, we’ll move on to making a fabric prototype. This stage helps us see how the bag comes together and decide whether any adjustments are needed before finalising the pattern.
These lessons introduce the fundamentals of bag pattern making. By the end, you’ll leave with a fabric prototype that can be refined and completed in the upcoming Leather Making Workshop.
You will leave knowing how to:
o Make a paper pattern for pattern cutting
o Use a knife for cutting pattern and leather
What to Bring:
o Sketchbook
o Pencil/ Pen for note and drawing
o Scrap fabric for prototyping
What I will provide:
o Tools
o Leather
o Handouts
o Notions/ thread, cutting materials
o Tea, Coffee and biscuits
Experience needed to achieve:
- Can you thread a needle?
- Can you cut on a straight line with a ruler and cutting tool?
- Can you use a sewing machine?
- Have you worked with pattern cutting before?
