Objective:
To learn the fundamentals of leather making for beginners.

In this 4-hour lesson, I will guide you through the process of creating leather goods from your sketchbook and transforming your ideas into a working pattern. We’ll look at different types of leather, discuss their properties, and explore which materials are best suited to structured bags versus softer designs.

By the end of the session, you’ll know how to cut leather, glue pieces together, and select the right tools for basic construction. You will leave with a set of leather samples and the foundational skills needed for the next course: Pattern Cutting for Small Leather Goods, where you’ll learn how to make a wallet or small pouch.

You will leave knowing how to:

o    Shop for leather supplies

o    Use a knife for cutting leather

o    Glue leather together

o    Hand sew with two threads called a saddle stitch

o    Create a basic pattern for leather making

o    Basic understand of preparing, making, cutting, punching and finishing

What to Bring:

o    Sketchbook

o    Pencil/ Pen for note and drawing

What I will provide:

o    Tools

o    Leather

o    Handouts

o    Notions/ Glue, thread, cutting materials

o    Tea, Coffee and biscuits

No experience required: In this class you will learn the essential skills needed for leather making. Should be comfortable working with your hands and using metal tools.
